ABOUT US NYAS is a national charity which provides rights based services across England and Wales. Our mission is to promote the rights and voice of children, young people and vulnerable adults through the provision of social and legal services. We are a unique socio legal charity. We currently provide: Advocacy services We are the largest provider in England and a significant provider in Wales of advocacy services for children who are looked after and children who are subject to child protection plans. We provide advocacy services for local authorities, independent residential providers, inpatient mental health settings, children with disabilities and children and young people in secure settings. In this way NYASS helps them to have their voices heard. We provide independent mental health advocates (IMHA’s) and we provide advocacy for adult carers, supporting some of the most vulnerable adults in society. Independent Visitors This is a large part of our work. NYAS provides volunteer Independent Visitors for children and young people who are looked after across England and Wales, helping them to benefit from a positive role model and promoting positive outcomes. Independent Persons for the purposes of secure reviews and local authority complaints. We can provide Investigating Officers for local authority complaint investigations. Regulation 33 Visitors for children’s homes. Participation and Consultation – we provide responses to a range of issues at local and policy making levels when the views of children and young people are important. WE offer accredited training for young people in recruitment of social care staff and Total Respect Train the Trainers Training We are an approved Centre for both City and Guilds and the Open College Network (Open Awards). We offer accredited training including the National Advocacy Qualification and specialist units including the IMHA (independent mental health advocacy) award. We provide bespoke training packages for public, voluntary and private sector organisations. NYAS has trained hundreds of children’s advocates and participation workers in England and Wales. Helpline/ Signposting – we have a national helpline and will do our best to address concerns through our skilled advisors. We will refer on to the local NYAS service if that is appropriate or we will signpost the caller to an appropriate service. We will do our best to provide a service if this appropriate. Separated Parents Information Programme – NYAS is an approved provider of the ‘Parenting information Programme’ (PIP) for separated parents. The PIP is a designated contact activity as defined by the Children and Adoption Act 2006. We currently deliver the programme in Birmingham, Wirral and Cheshire. Referrals on to the programme are made by the Family Courts. Contact Services – NYAS provide a range of contact services within the Merseyside area. We offer both supervised and supported contact, and are able to facilitate this either within our comfortable and welcoming family room or at places of interest within the local community. NYAS contact services also provide face to face work with children and young people, through areas such as life story work. Specialist Legal Services – NYAS Legal Service specially trained lawyers can provide advice, assistance and representation to children, young people and vulnerable adults on a broad range of legal issues including children & family matters, community care and education. In particularly complex private law proceedings (e.g. in relation to residence and/or contact disputes) the Judge can join the child as a party and appoint NYAS to act as the children’s guardian.
