Wednesday 20th November 2024, is World Children’s Day — a special day to focus on supporting children, protecting their rights, and making sure their voices are heard. This day celebrates the anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), an agreement signed by countries worldwide to ensure that every child has rights, no matter who they are or where they live.

At NYAS, we work every day to help children and young people speak up, be listened to, and have their rights respected.

Our services are grounded in the child-centred principles of the Children Act 1989 and the UNCRC, with a particular focus on Article 12, which champions the right of children to be heard and actively involved in decisions affecting their lives.

What Is Article 12 of the UNCRC?

Article 12 is a key part of the UNCRC. It says that children have the right to share their thoughts and feelings about decisions that affect them, and adults should take what they say seriously.

This is where advocacy comes in. Advocacy means supporting someone to speak up, share their views, and have their say.

How Does NYAS Help?

NYAS (National Youth Advocacy Service) is here to make sure children and young people’s voices are heard. Our advocates are independent adults who work only for the child or young person.

We help children to:

  • Talk about their worries and find ways to solve problems.
  • Share their wishes and feelings.
  • Attend important meetings or have someone go on their behalf.
  • Be part of decisions about their lives.
  • Make complaints if something isn’t right.

Our advocates are not there to judge or tell children what to do. They are there to listen, support, and make sure children feel confident speaking up.

Why This Day Matters

World Children’s Day is a reminder that every child deserves to feel valued, safe, and heard. At NYAS, we want every child and young person to know: we are here for you, and we are listening.

How to Get in Touch

If you’re a young person who needs help to share your thoughts or feelings, NYAS can support you.
