When a young person requests asylum in the UK, their age may be disputed. An appropriate, independent adult may be asked to work with and support that young person during their age assessment interviews. This training explores both the age assessment process and the Appropriate Adult role.

This course is recommended for professionals who are already undertaking the Appropriate Adult role within the age assessment (working with age-disputed young people) process, or those wishing to develop their understanding to do so.

Appropriate Adults and Age Assessments Explained

During an age assessment, the role of the appropriate adult is to:

  • Ensure the young person understands what is happening during the interviews, taking account of any cultural considerations.
  • Support, observe and advise the young person using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Ensure professionals follow the correct processes and that the young person understands their rights and entitlements.
