NYAS have joined forces with the End Child Poverty coalition to call on the UK Government to use next month’s budget to set out a plan to end child poverty, with a serious and immediate commitment to put more money in the pockets of hard-pressed families.
In a letter signed by NYAS and addressed to the chancellor, we are urging the Government to put children’s futures at the heart of our economic recovery. The impact of the pandemic has already disrupted education and put undue pressure on families. It is crucial that the Government extend sufficient financial support to ensuring all children experience a positive, fulfilled childhood, free from the constraints of poverty and financial hardship.
The letter suggests that a crucial first step along this road must be to keep legacy benefits – the £20-a-week uplift in Universal Credit- and to commit to increasing child-related benefits in the near future. It also means putting services for children and young people at the heart of this year’s Comprehensive Spending Review. The budget is due to be announced on 3rd March 2021.
